Another hard-earned draw finished off the season with only one loss in the last four games. This time we reversed an earlier 4-0 defeat at the hands of Brockham Badgers with a 2-2 draw as Dinarti scored with almost the last play of the match. See Match Report. Relegation is confirmed with one match still to play, as not only did we lose to second-placed Worcester Park, but the team immediately above us won. A controversial draw with second-bottom, Dorking Wanderers on 15 March, with echoes of the World Cup. With the scores tied at 1-1, the referee blew his whistle, just before the final kick of the game put the ball in the back of Kew’s net, to the disbelief of the Dorking supporters. A much-improved performance to draw 1-1 on 8 March with visitors, Epsom Eagles, who had beaten us comprehensively earlier in the season. A disappointing 7-1 thrashing at Farncombe Youth, especially as we’d held this last season premier elite side 1-1 earlier in the season. We suffered a second 3-0 loss in a row on 22 Feb, this time at home to Sutton United. We’d hoped for more here, after losing the reverse fixture at the beginning of the month to a single goal late in the match. A competitive match, first half especially, before we went down to runaway division leaders, Sandgate on 15 Feb. We were five minutes from a point at Sutton United when they finally got through our defence to record their third win on the trot on 1 Feb. We hit bottom on Jan 18, losing 3-0 at Chertsey Town, who’ve propped up the Table for most of the season. That followed several weeks of interruptions due to the weather conditions.
Our only match in December was a 4-0 loss at Brockham Badgers. That followed two 4-1 losses to top four sides in successive weeks, as we went down to visitors Sandgate on 30 Nov (which took them top) after a disappointing 4-1 loss at Worcester Park on 23 Nov. The previous week, a tremendous team performance to come back from a goal down to gain a point in the game against Farncombe. In an extraordinary Sunday, 16 Nov, all four games played ended as draws, three as 1-1, illustrating just how tight things are in this division. Before that it was two Cup exits in two weeks for Kew Youth. We were undone by the conditions at Wallington Wanderers in the Surrey Cup as they had the advantage of a ferocious wind in the second half. The previous week, we crashed out of the League Cup, losing 11-0 at Premier Elite side, AFC Wimbledon. In the league, we’d lost three in a row, the last on 26 Oct, a 3-1 defeat at top of the table Kingstonians. We’d managed to hold them to a 1-1 draw in the season opener. Prior to that we’d been beaten at home by Chertsey Town on 19 Oct, after surrendering our unbeaten league record a week earlier at Epsom Eagles. Those losses followed two weeks of friendlies, while enjoying walkovers in Cup competitions. Kew U16 Youth had started the League well, with a 1-2 victory at Dorking Wanderers, following that draw with Kingstonians. (See Match Reports).
