Kew defeat nemesis Kew Association Youth 6-4 Wandgas, 12 Sept, League Our first league game of the season and we knew this would be a tough game as we were playing Wandgas who we’ve never beaten in the 2 years we’ve been together as a team. Wandgas started the stronger competing more for the 50-50’s and being quite physical with us. We suffered an early blow when right winger, Chris Howden was substituted after he was injured in a clash of knees.
15 minutes into the first half Wandgas took the lead after we failed to mark their free man who scored a header to make it 1-0 to Wandgas. The goal shook us up and we responded positively created some half chances. We won a free kick on the edge of their box where central midfielder Alex Rovira floated an excellent ball into their penalty area, which was met by the head of striker Charles Hall, whose header went into the top corner. From that point we looked the stronger side and we took the lead just before half time, when Charles crossed the ball to be headed in by striker Sam Birch.
After some stern words at half time we wanted to see a better second half performance but we could have not started any worse when Wandgas not only equalised but took the lead, when they scored two identical goals after our defence had been beaten by two balls over the top. However the boys did not let this affect them and could not have produced a better response. Sam Birch equalised for us when he placed the ball past the keeper after some confusion in the Wandgas penalty area. Sam went onto grab his hat trick when pressured the Wandgas defence to play the ball back to their keeper from kick off, Sam got their first and chipped the ball over the keeper to make it 4-3 to Kew. We scored our fifth goal minutes later when Charles got his second after a sublime strike which lobbed the keeper from 25 yards.
From this point we really controlled the game and there was some fantastic contributions from new centre back Dominic Flavell and midfielder Fabian Henning. Sadly Wandgas scored again after we failed to defend a free kick which was knocked over the defence and their striker finished to make it 5-4. However, this did not faze the boys and we restored our two goal advantage when Sam Birch got his fourth with a top corner finish. The game finished 6-4 to Kew which I felt we deserved and was a very important victory for our first game of the campaign. Man of the match was Sam Birch.
