Enz with a bang... or a whimper A difficult end to the season as we’d lost the use of our home ground on Sundays, so some matches were played at other venues, others rearranged to midweek or Saturday and others were defaulted. Well done to all teams having to cope with such disruptive circumstances.
Our best overall result of the season came from our team not in action, the U18s who ended second in their league after main rivals, Kingstonians managed to win all their games in hand to finish a point ahead of Kew. A team with plenty to do in the last few weeks was our U13s, who came third, having to beat rivals Links home and away, and very nearly snatched a point from runaway division winners Cheam Rangers. They then rounded off the season with a 2-1 win over Kingstonian Colts who finished mid table a division above them. Success too for our U17 Colts, who in their first season in the Surrey Primary League, finished 3rd, in spite of recording two draws in the double header against Send United. The long season helped, as main rivals Woking Comets defaulted their last two matches. U17 Casuals tested themselves out for next season in the Surrey Primary League, beating the second division 3rd placed side Byfleet Village but losing to runners-up Hersham, in end of season friendlies.
U12 Colts in their first season were a creditable 8th and in fact would have finished 7th if the league had allowed them to postpone their match against Sheen Lions, whom they beat in a friendly, a couple of weeks after Kew had to default during the Easter holidays. That said, their main problem was inconsistency, as they enjoyed wins against most sides above them, but also lost the return fixtures AND went down to teams below them. In their first season in the Premier division U12 Youth consolidated their position with a mid table finish, but in their last game 8-1 lost to the division champions which shows a gulf still exists to the top two sides. However, they did post wins or close results against the other teams above them.
A disappointing season for our two sides which have decided not to continue, U15s and U16s, although both managed to avoid the wooden spoon. U15s eased past bottom side Hearts of Teddlothian in a late mid-week double header in which they comfortably won both legs. That result took them above Tooting & Mitcham, but their last opponents moved back ahead of them with a 4-0 win in the last match. Much promise early season from our U16s but they continued last season’s habit of narrowly losing matches they could have won to slip down the table. They were generally competitive against all but the top sides, and could have finished as high as 6th if a few results had gone the other way, as they proved with a Cup run which took them through to the semi-final.
