2008-09 Season

Last season:
A big expansion last season saw us add five new teams, most of which have continued into the new season. Unfortunately, our two youngest teams have been unable to continue for various reasons. We wish their players and managers all the best. However, you can still follow the exploits of all our teams last season by following the links to each team.

It was a mixed bag of outcomes for our teams.

Under 16 Youth found themselves in a very strong Premier North division after the Surrey Youth League decided to have only one premier elite league. After a good start they struggled, eventually finishing bottom of the division.

Under 16 Colts were faced with a rebuilding year, after losing some of their best players to the Youth team and others dropping out. They struggled in the SYL division one, eventually finishing bottom of the North section.

Under 16 Casuals, by contrast, were able to keep their squad intact and in a big improvement on the previous season, when they were eighth out of 12, finished third out of 10 in the Epsom and Ewell League’s division one

Under 15 Youth experienced both ends of the table during a mixed season.  They started with a roar but as the weather got colder and wetter, they faded. Revitalised in the spring, they ended with mid-table respectability in SYL division one.

Under 14 Youth were a new team and experienced a difficult first season. They finished bottom of the SYL division one, although only after another side below them dropped out late in the season. However, there were some encouraging results, especially a win over the 5th placed side in the season finale.

Under 12 Youth were one of our success stories, spending most of the season top or thereabouts of the SYL division two table. A controversial draw in their final league match meant they finished runners-up.

Under 11 Youth were another new team and determined to make an impact. With a runaway leader in their SYL division one, it was all about the battle for 2nd place. And although they did lose a couple of vital games, they’ve anyway earned promotion in a reorganised league.

Under 10 Youth were another to make an impact in their first, and regrettably, only season. They were in the running until almost the final game, finishing second in the SYL Premier South League.

Under 8 Youth had a mixed season. In the first half, they were one of the dominant teams in the SYL’s Green division, earning promotion to the Red division. There though they struggled, although achieving their aim of pitting themselves against the best. Sadly, they too have folded.

Small-sided tournaments: During the summer, Kew AFC Youth have enjoyed a successful campaign taking part in many 5, 6 and 7 aside tournaments.

Our Under 15 A team (now U16), Kew Youth, won three tournaments, at Walton and Hersham, Molesey and Camberley, as well as making the later stages of the knockout phase in most others they took part in.

The Colts and Casuals also performed creditably, holding their own against teams which normally play many divisions above them. Both sides went down only 1-0 against Premier Elite AFC Wimbledon in the Elm Grove tournament. Highlight for the Colts was finishing runner-up in Molesey’s plate competition; for the Casuals it was making it through to the knock-out stage of the competition at Camberley, where they were beaten in the quarter finals by our own A side, Kew Youth, the eventual tournament winners.
